Additional Project Collateral
In Kenya, the challenges are equally as daunting. Only 60% of Nairobi’s three million inhabitants have relaible and affordable access to clean water. Knowledge of and access to hygiene and nutrition products can be similarly tenuous. Over 80% of pre-school aged kids have Vitamin A deficiency. Diarrheal diseases are among the top ten causes of morbidity and mortality.
IDEO.org worked with Unilever, Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) to design a scalable and sustainable social enterprise in Kenya selling water alongside hygiene and nutrition products. The project is based on the notion that by using a human-centered process to define the offer and developing a combined solution (water, hygiene, and nutrition), it would be possible to have a deeper and lasting impact.
